You all know me by now, and I have to admit... I almost 100% completely agree with him on this video.

There were a crap ton of 16-bit side scrollers that were garbage. I also agree that gaming HAD to move on, especially into the 3D space. it is just an aesthetic/taste thing for me. The Game Cube is the system that really smoothed out the polygons enough for my taste. Everything from there on works for me, in terms of the way 3D games look.

Gaming had to move on at some point. A case in point was the Sega Saturn it failed in most part to bring out quality 3D titles and bombed as a result.

The majority of the budget games were side scrollers or basic arcade adventures. Mostly the arcade adventures scrolled side to side like Dizzy etc. Don't get me wrong there were some really good budget games that were side scrollers like Kendo Warrior and Slayer (side scrolling schmup). These were only 2 pounds or so.

A lot of them though like Toasty has said were just foiller or poor arcade conversions just churned out to give us something to play till the next big thing came out.

Good example of the side scrollers are the Ocean licenses, all of those games (bar Untouchables to a lesser extent) were side multi directional scrolling arcade adventure games.

They were the first person shooter of the day

Another vid has confirmed my view a know nothing know it all. Thinks he invented games colleting. Showing his retro elitism too here.

One thing some of these overtly retro people seem unwilling to mention is side scrollers were the FPS of the 8 bit 16 bit era. Lots of them churned out with loads of them pure filler.

What would he want never to leave the 16 bit era and stay in 2d forever?

Ha! I can see how we can view this differently Lee. Microsoft has never really pushed the kind of games I like. Games like Halo and Titanfall push online multiplayer where I would prefer party games played together. I also like mascot and cartoon-style games that break from reality.

But, I can certainly see how Microsoft expanded the gaming industry. But, like a lot of things... I like them better when fewer people like them. Mainly because as audiences grow, products become watered down as to not alienate anyone. Like Hip hop and rock. So I agree and disagree, lol.

MS certainly grew the industry, along with SONY, but that growth changed what game developers can and cannot do to reach that new audience. And I'm not a big fan of the things they do for that audience

I watched and I don't agree, and it's not because I'm a fanboy either. The natural evolution of gaming/console gaming changed, and not ruined gaming. There's more people gaming now than ever. What you may be seeing is the creeping in of "Things were better when I was young..." syndrome.
